Urban Environmental Design Research: Case Studies of Ten Cities
The volume provides detailed accounts of the organizational methods and administrative activities for urban environmental design in 10 cities. These include Savannah and Decatur, Ga.; Charleston, S.C.,; Hudson, N.Y.; Mankato, Minn.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; Baltimore, Md.; Seattle, Wash.; Los Angeles, Calif.; and Dallas, Tex. Besides relating the context for urban environmental design, each case relates one or more situations of design administration in action. The volume is oriented to the administrator or researcher who desires detailed accounts of how design occurs in local governments. The cities selected represent a wide range of geographic locations, age, political and organizational structures, and size. Researchers reviewed literature to attain a general profile of a city before extensive site visits to places chosen for more focused research on examplary projets. Site visits involved extensive interviews with local project and community representatives. The history of significant events was uncovered. Persons interviewed represented opponents as well as proponents of significant local change. Diagrams, maps, and photographs are provided.
