Estimation of the Settlements of Cross-Anisotropic Deposits Using Isotropic Theory
In settlement computations, soil or rock mass is usually considered as being isotropic, although anisotropy of some degree commonly occurs in natural deposits. Using linear elastic theory, the amount of error in estimating the settlement of cross-anisotropic deposits using isotropic theory is predicted. As a measure of error, movement factors are defined which relate the surface movements obtained by isotropic theory to the surface movements obtained by considering the actual cross-anisotropic properties of the deposit.
