Structural Analysis of Asphaltic Cold Mixtures Used in Pavement Bases
A structural analysis of asphaltic cold mixtures used in pavement bases has been conducted. The major objective of this study was to develop procedures that relate asphaltic cold mixture structural properties to pavement performance. The structural properties can then be measured in the laboratory and the results used in the structural design of the pavement. Asphaltic cold mixtures refers to both asphalt emulsion and cutback stabilized granular materials. The emphasis of this study is on using local aggregates for low volume road pavement bases. A tentative recommended procedure was developed that correlates the resilient modulus of the cold mix with the structural coefficient of the base as used in the Illinois Department of Transportation procedure for design of flexible pavements and also the AASHTO Interim Guide for design of flexible pavements. A stress dependent finite element pavement structural analysis program along with performance data and results from the AASHO Road Test were used to develop the approximate correlation.
