Virginia Key Beach Erosion Control Project, Second Periodic Nourishment and Groins
The project proposes hydraulic excavation and placement of 100,000 cubic yards of sand on 1.8 miles of the ocean shore of Virginia Key to provide 70 feet of level beach berm at elevation 6 feet mean low water, and construction of one impermeable and 12 permeable groins. Material for beach nourishment will come from the Miami Harbor deepening project. The cost/benefit ratio is estimated at 1 to 2.2. Beach fill will be dredged from a section of the Miami Harbor project channel and conveyed by pipeline and distributed on the project site at Virginia Key. Dredging and distributing the sandfill will temporarily degrade water quality at the borrow and beach fill sites, destroy some marine invertebrate life in borrow and beach sites, cover some vegetation at the beach site and curtail use of the beach by the public for a short period.
