Estimating Standard Densities for Embankment and Subgrade Soils
The purpose was to determine a rapid and reliable method for estimating the standard density for embankment and subgrade materials in Alabama. The method should be readily understood and accepted by field soils inspectors and rapidly and easily used to determine the approximate standard densities. The method developed should not replace laboratory testing of soil samples, but rather give the inspectors in the field a reliable method for determining standard densities when time or circumstances prevent more detailed testing. The scope of this report include: (1) a library research of rapid density methods; (2) an investigation of the variation of specific gravities of embankment and subgrade materials encountered within the State; (3) a detailed investigation of the mechanical properties of the several soil types commonly encountered in Alabama; and (4) development of typical or average moisture-density and moisture-penetration resistance relationships to describe these soils.
