ORIGINAL ARTICLES - Effect of Partial Oxygen Supply on Mitochondrial Electron Transport System During Complete Cardiac Ischemia - Two myocardial protection methods (blood and crystalloid cardioplegia) were used in coronary artery surgery to test aerobic and anaerobic cardiomyocyte metabolism under conditions of complete and incomplete hypoxia. Respiratory chain enzyme activities and lactate content were studied in myocardial microbiopsies for preischemic and postischemic conditions. Myocardial lactate content increased in both groups. However, activity change ratios of the enzymes were not different between groups. These findings suggest that the superiority of blood cardioplegia over crystalloid cardioplegia is not mediated through the high oxygen content of blood cardioplegia.
