Envelhecimento, emprego e remunerações nas regiões portuguesas: uma análise shift-share
The rapid ageing of the Portuguese population will lead to a reduction in the working age population together with an increase in the proportion of older workers. Although this is a national trend, the aggregate phenomenon may hide varying regional dynamics, which need to be highlighted. In this article, an analysis is made of the regional differences regarding the ageing of the workforce in the two decades between 1989 and 2009, using a shift-share analysis that allows researchers to distinguish between the national effect (macroeconomic growth), the proportional effect (industrial mix), and the differential effect (local factors). In looking at the age premium regarding earnings on both a national scale and for each individual region, the authors have investigated and quantify the impact of the shifts in the educational structure of two age groups -- workers under 55 years old and older workers.
