MOOCs, e-learning and beyond: exploring the future of virtual built environment teaching University College London, 1 July 2014
Massive Open Online Courses, (MOOC), have increased at a galloping pace since the term was first coined by Stanford University in 2011. These free, high-quality, university-level courses are available to anyone with an Internet connection. In Europe alone, 200 courses a month are now added to the mix. There is no shortage of speculation and debate around this revolution in education. Proponents suggest that this is the start of the demise of the physical university as we know it, while doubters lament it as a fad that is unlikely to have a profound effect. While this simplistic and perhaps too-early-to-tell binary perpetuates, it is clear there is no question that MOOCs have already provided wider access to education than anything that's come before. The conference included four keynote talks and short presentations from speakers who travelled to London from across the UK, as well as Europe, the US and Australia. The audience, was comprised of an eclectic mix of educators and professional staff interested in e-learning generally, including MOOCs.
