Reducing Defects in Concrete Columns
While column integrity is very important in any building, it is particularly important in buildings constructed in locations with high seismic activity. The authors' experiences in designing and observing the construction of several tall buildings in Indonesia have shown that some critical issues need to be addressed if columns are to meet the demands required during a seismic event. Recently, they have been called upon to examine reinforced concrete columns with potential defects. In this article, they discuss some of these projects and the retrofits used to strengthen the columns and rectify the identified defects. With the intent of preventing future occurrences of these problems, they further propose improvements to the current design and construction methods for reinforced concrete columns in earthquake-resistant buildings.
