Compressive Strength of Unreinforced Struts
The authors are to be complimented for their excellent work. The discussers present a few points that merit serious consideration of the readers, researchers, and particularly the standard-setting body, the American Concrete Institute. The discussers fully agree with the authors that despite the published works of Sahoo et al. (2009b) and Pujol et al. (2011), a serious misconception still exists that a bottleshaped strut is weaker in resisting compression as compared to a prismatic strut of a like grade of concrete, such as specimen height and thickness, and equal loaded area. It is the discussers' opinion that the experimental work showed no clear and consistent trend to support the hypothesis that prismatic struts possess higher unit strength than planar bottle-shaped struts. The authors would like to thank the discussers for their comments. The objectives of the authors' work were to compile and report data from tests of unreinforced prismatic struts.
