Prestressed Concrete-The Innovator's Industry
The prestressed concrete industry is often thought of in terms of bridge and building products. In reality, it is the ingenuity of the people behind the products and the innovation that goes into advancing these products that has been and is the prime mover of the industry. It is impossible in a short article to recognize all the people who were instrumental in the progress of prestressed concrete but, by focusing on a few of the pioneers, the potential for new innovation becomes evident. At the time, linear prestressed concrete was a totally new building material in the US. As they would today if another new material were proposed, the city's engineers required substantial validation of the strength and behavior of the bridge girder as part of the contract documents. So before the actual bridge girders were fabricated, Preload Corporation fabricated a 160 ft long test girder. Innovation remains at the core of the prestressed concrete industry.
