From Trash to Treasure
Using waste materials as nontraditional aggregates offers cost savings while promoting sustainability for new construction. In addition to reducing the volume of material placed in landfills, this use of waste materials reduces the use of naturally mined materials, thus reducing the footprint and impact of the construction industry on the natural environment. As part of a collaborative effort between the University of Florida, Pasco County Solid Waste and Public Works departments, and the Hinkley Center for Solid and Hazardous Waste Research, a pilot-scale portland cement concrete (PCC) roadway was recently constructed using bottom ash from the Pasco County Resource Recovery Facility (RRF) as a partial aggregate replacement in a portland cement concrete pavement.1,2 The material was produced at a waste-to-energy (WTE) facility in Florida. Construction of the roadway demonstrated that incorporation of WTE bottom ash did not adversely affect the workability or placement of the concrete.
