The discussed paper is an excellent presentation of the important issue concerning when concrete in the field has reached the appropriate "set" to proceed with finishing. The paper includes frank and very useful discussion regarding problems that develop in the field when the various steps in finishing rely too much on standard lab test results for initial and final set, rather than on how the surface of the actual concrete in the field is actually performing. This discussion is not meant to reiterate the content of the excellent paper, but rather to endorse it from the standpoint of the discusser's experience of being a "hands-on" laborer and concrete finisher since the 1960s through work as an engineer specializing in concrete and materials, including substantial experience with the issue of set time. As the authors imply, specifications and inspection protocols often include reference to standard set time tests.
