A Minimum Flexural Reinforcement Puzzle
The ACI Codes, ACI 318-141 and earlier editions, have many limitations on the amount and spacing of reinforcement. These requirements are intended to improve the behavior of reinforced concrete structures by various means, including reducing the likelihood of undesirable failure modes. Seguirant et al. presented an extensive discussion of minimum reinforcement requirements for beams, with suggestions for improving the ACI Code. The current study is concerned with minimum flexural reinforcement ratios in beams and slabs, with the main emphasis on slabs. The minimum flexural reinforcement for a nonprestressed beam is governed by Section 9.6.1 of ACI 318-14. In contrast, the minimum reinforcement requirements for solid slabs, Sections 7.6.1 and 8.6.1 of ACI 318-14 are independent of the concrete strength, depending only on the steel yield stress. The current minimum reinforcement requirements need to be updated to include at least the effects of concrete strength.
