Decorative Concrete Council Award Winners for 2017
The Decorative Concrete Council, a specialty council of the American Society of Concrete Contractors, announced the winners of its ninth annual Decorative Concrete Awards competition. The winners were recognized at a ceremony at World of Concrete, Las Vegas, NV, on January 17, 2017. Sundeck of San Antonio, San Antonio, TX, won the WOW! Award, best overall project, for Mission Concepcion Park, also in San Antonio. A 7000 ft2 (650 m2) area of the park's concrete walkways received a combination of staining and scarification to create an intricate, swirled design that mimics the swirls and eddies of the San Antonio River. After application of an acid stain, templates were applied and patterns were created in the surface using needle scalers. Although the area was unavailable for over 10 months before it was possible for final cleanup and application of clear seal and grit, the project was completed in time for its opening ceremony.
