Shear Response of Prestressed Thin-Webbed Continuous Girders
It is good to see a paper from the west side of the Atlantic including coverage of Eurocodes but it is not clear the interpretation is always quite right. In the introduction, it notes that prestress has no effect on shear strength in the EC2 predictions. This is true for beams with moderate areas of shear reinforcement. However, with large areas, it affects the truss angle that can be used, while with low areas, the shear strength predicted ignoring the shear reinforcement is higher than that using the links; and this is affected by prestress. As the definition of large areas of shear reinforcement here is relative to concrete strength, and the test specimens had high concrete strengths, it appears the authors are correct to use the flattest angle allowed for all their specimens. However, it appears they did not consider the fact that the strength ignoring links could be greater than that considering them.
