Seismic Tests on Heavyweight Concrete Shear Walls with Wire Ropes as Lateral Reinforcement
The discusser would like to thank the authors for carrying out an interesting study highlighting the difference in flexural behavior of heavyweight concrete (HWC) shear walls with all configuration of wire-rope-tied boundary columns and that of conventional reinforcing bar ties through experimental tests and numerical validation. However, the discusser would like to express his concern about the choice of HWC used for shear wall tests with respect to: 1) low compressive strength; 2) mixture proportion and ingredients; and 3) volumetric index of wire ropes. Low compressive strength -- HWC is used as a primary supporting structure in the nuclear power plants and associated fuel reprocessing and medical facilities where space reduction and savings in penetrating complex embedments are achieved for the equal attenuation of ionizing radiation by normal-density concrete.
