Bond strength in mortar/ceramic tile interface—testing procedure and adequacy evaluation
Old mortars have specific characteristics that vary with location, type of building, type of use and time of application. When mortars or systems containing mortars lose function, it becomes necessary to develop new compatible compositions. Bond strength tests for rehabilitation or conservation mortars, based mostly on EN 1015-12: 2000 (CEN in EN 1015-12:2000. Brussels, 2000), are not suitable for materials with low mechanical and bond strengths due to lack of readability and accuracy. A new test was developed on the universal testing machine to test bond strength of mortars to ceramic tiles. The new test, unlike other tests, including those performed with existing standards, proved to be very accurate and suitable for testing this type of mortars. All specimens could be tested and a low coefficient of variation was obtained. Hydrated lime mortars show applicability and reversibility in their use for application of old ceramic tiles in facades.
