Shear Strength of Prestressed and Nonprestressed Concrete Beams
Current ACI 318 code requirements for determining the shear strength of concrete beams are separated into two distinctly different methods: one for nonprestressed reinforced concrete (RC) and one for prestressed concrete (PC). This design methodology is very confusing and difficult for engineers to understand, as multiple equations are used to define the contribution of the concrete to shear strength, Vc. The difficulty level is particularly high for PC beams, because two sets of equations are required to check for flexural shear failure Vci and web shear failure Vcw. To simplify the shear strength calculations and to integrate the two failure modes of PC beams, Laskar et al. and Hsu et al. proposed a shear prediction equation incorporating a factor (Vud/Mu), known as the "arch action factor." Li et al proposing unified design provisions for calculating the shear strength of concrete beams applicable to PC as well as RC beams.
