Dissecting the origins of Chile's Quinta Normal de Agricultura as a colonial garden, 1838-1856
This article focuses on the understanding of Santiago’s Quinta Normal de Agricultura (“the Quinta”) as an offset-in-time colonial garden, the first and only one in the country. It is an inquiry into the economic, political and social forces that guided the creation and development of “the Quinta,” in particular during its first two decades of existence, between 1838 and 1856. The main focus is the vision of the Quinta’s first hired manager, Italian agronomist Luigi Sada di Carlo (1821-1889), who faced the challenges of implanting, domesticating, breeding and propagating new varieties of plants around the city while systematizing planting practices and introducing specialized planting areas in a specific site, the Quinta Normal de Agricultura, located on the western outskirts of Santiago.
