Effects of Air Void Clustering on Concrete Compressive Strength
This article is based on petrographic examinations of concrete specimens related to low-strength problems. For this article, the term clustering refers to the condition in a hardened concrete sample whereby a thin layer of highly air-entrained cement paste surrounds coarse aggregate particles. Based on their laboratory study of the air void clustering phenomenon, the authors make a number of claims that the discussers believe to be invalid: 1. The authors did not find a correlation between clustering and concrete compressive strength, and infer that such a correlation does not exist. 2. The authors describe a new method for evaluating the severity of air void clustering (Air Void Clustering Index), which the discussers believe is not valid. The authors decided to use the total air content because its concept is more easily understood by most of the industry. The software (and the method itself) is capable of obtaining the clustering index as a percent of the paste, mortar, or concrete, and in the future, any of those values could be used.
