CAPO-TEST to Estimate Concrete Strength in Bridges
The authors should be commended for presenting a forceful case for the applicability of pullout testing (LOK-TEST and CAPO-TEST) to determine the in-place strength of concrete. The discusser would like to draw attention to the fact that the excellent correlation between pullout force and concrete compressive strength is due to the specific relationship between imbedment depth h, disc diameter d, and counterpressure diameter D. The original developer of the LOK-TEST (the forerunner of the CAPO-TEST), Kierkegaard-Hansen, arrived at the adopted geometry by trial and error, discovering that it gave the best correlation. Subsequently, Jensen and Braestrup explained this by the theory of plasticity, taking the modified Coulomb failure criterion as yield condition for concrete (this is thus the first attempt at understanding the failure mechanism, pre-dating Ottosen). ACI Conventions give attendees the opportunity to participate in the development of industry codes and standards, learn about the latest in concrete technology, network with leading concrete professionals, and fulfill potential continuing education requirements.
