Shear Strength Prediction of Reinforced Concrete Deep Beams with Web Openings
An analytical method is proposed to predict the shear strength of reinforced concrete deep beams with web openings and to evaluate the associated failure mode and its corresponding position. The proposed method aims to define the shear-transfer paths in reinforced concrete deep beams with web openings based on the strut-and-tie concept, and to distribute the shears among the transfer paths above and below the web openings based on the stiffness ratios. This method can predict several failure modes, including reinforced concrete crushing, yielding of reinforcement, and splitting of concrete. By evaluating specimens with different concrete strengths, reinforcement amounts, span-depth ratios, and sizes and positions of web openings, the results indicate that the proposed method can address rational shear strength predictions on reinforced concrete deep beams with web openings. Moreover, the proposed model has significant physical configurations with simple calculations, making it suitable for applications in engineering practice.
