Low-cost local road materials in southern Africa
Summary Southern African natural gravel and soil road materials are mostly residual soils, residual weathered rocks or pedocretes which are inferior in quality to materials found in northern Europe and North America. Although they can be used to effect substantial savings in costs, the conditions under which marginal and nonstandard materials can be successfully used are not yet well-understood, and further research is necessary. Greater political and engineering acceptance of appropriate standards and risk would probably enable more unpaved roads to be surfaced.
