Experimental investigation of a foundation bed on a rigid underlying layer
Conclusions 1. Inhomogeneity of a foundation bed substantially affects the distribution of contact pressures and the deformation of structures, and this should be taken into account in future planning. With decrease in the distance between a structure and the rock foundation bed on which it rests, the stress concentration increases. At a distance to rock of h=b, the stress at depth may be assumed to be constant, equal to the contact pressure. 2. At sites of sharp transition from one strain modulus to another, the curves of contact pressures and stresses within the soil mass have uneven outlines (with breaks). 3. The rigidity of a structure substantially affects the distribution of contact pressures. With increase in flexibility of a structure, the difference between extremes of contact pressures and strains increases. With increase in depth, the effect of rigidity of a structure on the stress distribution within the soil mass declines.
