Strength and deformability of clayey soils in tension
Conclusions 1. The failure of soil in the investigated range of initial states (density and moisture content) and loading paths is determined by the mechanism of breaking (brittle fracture), and the elastic component of limit strain in tension e3(e)* is constant. 2. The limit state of soil is in good agreement with the statement that the maximum elastic deformations in tension are constant, from which it follows that$$\sigma _{equ}^* = \sigma _3 - p^{(e)*} (\sigma _1 + \sigma _2 ) = const.$$ The relation of the parameters of strength condition σequ* and $ μ^{(e)} $* to the initial state of the soil has been established. 3. For soils with a degree of brittleness k ≤ 0.15, the effect of tensile stresses on the plastic component of deformation may be neglected. The volumetric strain here is almost completely elastic.
