Effectiveness of foundations in pits tamped into clayey soils not prone to slump-type settlement
Abstract Results are presented for experimental studies of comparative evaluation of the bearing capacity of the soil bed for foundations installed in tamped pits, and on the natural bed. Results are cited for investigation of the performance of three types of foundations at a site where clayey soils not prone to slump-type settlement are in occurrence: on the natural bed, in a tamped pit, and in a tamped pit with a broadened base. It is demonstrated that use of tamped pits appreciably increases the bearing capacity of the bed.
