Arkadian and Boiotian Orchomenos, centres of Mycenaean hydraulic engineering
Abstract The Greek karst-poljes in Arkadia (Northeast Peloponnes) and in Boiotia (Middle-Greece) contain the remarkable relics of the eldest land reclamation and water management systems in Europe. The schemes have been developed and installed in the Mycenaean era of Greece, especially when this period was at its zenith around 1300 B.C. The two cities with the same name Orchomenos became political and cultural centres of the special regions. At these places the hydro-technical skill rose to a very high standard creating the legendary prosperity of the most famous enclosed basins of Greece.
