North Donets-Donbass Canal siphon pipe-line operation
Conclusions The total maximum ground-surface settlement in the siphon pipe line section of the North Donets-Donbass Canal amounted to 400 mm during the observation period (1959–1965); the maximum horizontal displacements reached 2.5 mm/m, and the minimum measured radius of curvature was equal to 5.5 km.The measures taken for protection of the pipe line against harmful effects of undermining allowed for compensation of the ground-surface deformations within the limits indicated above, without any disturbances. Consequently, these measures can be recommended for the protection of construction similar to the siphon pipe line under analogous ground-surface deformation conditions.A stress in the pipe line higher than the design stress can be explained by the occurrence of additional friction forces between the pipe line and the intermediate supports. Another possibility is an effect of ground-surface displacement causing pipe line distortion and attendant stress increase in the pipe.In view of the fact that ground-surface displacements in the investigated section are increasing each year, observations should be continued on the construction operation.
