Mechanism of the shearing resistance of rocks along cracks
Conclusions The shearing resistance of concrete blocks along their contacts and of rocks along cracks is not described by Coulomb’s Eq. (1) for a wide range of normal stresses. The results of shear experiments can be approximated on individual sections by Coulomb’s straight lines, but for different parameters tan ϕ and C-tan ϕ decreases and C increases with increase of normal stresses.Experiments show that shear strength on rough contacts is described satisfactorily by a relation of the form $ τ_{lim} $=K·$ σ^{n} $. The exponent n for all tested concrete and diabase specimens was 0.8–0.9 and the coefficient K for each specimen assumed values depending on the physical properties of the material of the contact zone and the nature of the shear surface roughness. The present article does not exhaust the problems of shearing resistance along rock cracks. It is necessary to continue theoretical and experimental investigations with the use of current achievements in the theory of friction.
