Conclusions The earth pressure diagrams observed in the field on retaining walls and on the walls of lock chambers with discontinuous bottom slabs may be obtained by adding the basic pressure and the backfill pressure.A method for determining the backfill pressure is presented in this article, as applied to the model of a foundation of finite thickness by considering the variable modulus of deformation of the backfill, corresponding to the different depths, which permits obtaining design earth pressures close to those observed in the field. The analysis of the walls of lock chambers and of retaining walls with the inclusion of the backfill pressure makes it possible to design adequately the elements of these structures and to avoid possible failures.
