The earth dams at the Kanevsk hydroelectric plant
Conclusions Experience with construction of the spread-section hydraulic-fill dam at the Kanevsk hydroelectric plant confirms the convenience and effectiveness of the method of placing hydraulic fills, without using trestles, by discharging the slurry from the ends of the pipes. The flexible pipe and the quickly demountable bell-and-spigot joints made it possible to regulate easily the slurry flow when forming the design section of the structure, and to obtain a high-quality hydraulic-fill dam body with complete elimination of manual labor. To speed up the discharge of water on the recently placed hydraulic fill, especially during the winter, use was made efficiently of a bulldozer, which in the intervals between construction of the embankment traveled over the entire area of the fill, thus creating vibration loads intended to produce additional compaction of the soil.To obtain the required density at the upstream slope under the reinforce-concrete slabs, it is necessary in the planning of the hydraulic-fill placement work to carry the loose embankments beyond the limits of the design section, or to specify their compaction. The systematic control of the construction work and strict application of the techniques for placing the hydraulic fills permitted completing the earth dam in accordance with the specifications; the analysis of extensive geotechnical data confirms the absolute stability and reliability of this dam.
