10 years of operation of the Upper Tuloma hydroelectric plant
Conclusions The high quality of the construction work and the fact that the structures were placed in operation under excellent conditions permit maintaining these conditions in the future without substantial operating expenditures. The measures implemented by the personnel, (including installation of additional oil coolers in the thrustbearing housing and elimination of the system of direct water cooling of the segments, strengthening of the levers of the runner-blade adjusting mechanism, trimming of the leading edges of the blades, provision for continuous regeneration of oil in the hydraulic unit systems, etc.) have increased the reliability of the hydraulic units, which has made it possible to use the plant in a frequency control regime in the system, to increase its installed capacity, and to lengthen the intermaintenance period of the units.A shortcoming in the layout of the hydraulic development is the location of the mechanical timber transshiping point immediately upstream from the intake. Timber wastes and rope pass through the trashracks and penetrate into the gates and units, causing damage to the equipment as well as emergency situations. The turbine manufacturer should devote attention to increasing the reliability of the runner-blade packings and hubs in those cases in which units with Kaplan turbines are to be used in the frequency control regime.
