Foreign experience with hydroelectric plant reconstruction
Conclusions As shown by foreign experience, the reconstruction of old hydroelectric plants may be an economical way of improving the use of hydropower resources and upgrading the role of hydroelectric plants in the load regulation of power systems.There is experience with reconstruction of hydroelectric plants, ranging from the very large (Grand Coulee) to the very small. At low-head plants wide use is made of horizontal units when reconstructing.In several countries, attention is paid to reconstruction of low-capacity hydroelectric plants) not only the equipment is modernized, but also use is made of automation, including computer complexes which increase the control reliability and reduce the need for operating personnel.The increase in fuel prices in the world market has encouraged the reconstruction and modernization of old hydroelectric plants, which were formerly considered unprofitable.To increase the hydroelectric plant capacity and improve streamflow regulation, hydraulic structures are being widely reconstructed; another factor resulting from reconstruction of hydraulic structures is the increase in their safety factor.
