Conclusions The proposed generalized functions for determining the duration of the starting operation of hydraulic turbogenerator unit in the pumping mode, enable computations to be made with a sufficient degree of accuracy, taking into account features of the characteristic graphs of the electric motor, the hydraulic machine, and the conduit system, for cases frequently encountered in practice. A fully or partially closed gate on the upstream conduit, a partially submerged check valve on the upstream side, with $ T_{m} $/$ T_{w} $⩾6–7, and also a dry conduit, if the value of the moment of resistance $ M_{o} $ for the hyposynchronous rotational frequency is known.In the cases of starting hydropower units in the pumping mode of operation, when the check valve is not partially submerged on the downsteam side, or is partially submerged but with $ T_{m} $/$ T_{w} $<6–7, also for starting with an empty conduit, special investigations should be carried out.
