Compaction of earthfill in the Nurek dam and organization of geotechnical control
Conclusions When constructing high earth — rock dams in narrow canyons with small areas of fill operations the rate of filling largely depends on reducing the time spent on compaction and geotechnical control of each layer. The use of special vibrating rollers of the PVK-70ÉA type with interchangeable roller drums and adjustable frequency of vibration and disturbing force allows them to be employed for compacting various types of soils being placed in dams; these rollers provided the high densities required by the design with a minimum expenditure of time on compacting the layer. The use of modern rapid methods when determining the geotechnical characteristics of fill materials permits placing the dam without delaying operations during the time of taking and processing soils samples.A special geotechnical service for monitoring all stages of the preparation and placement of soils in the dam is needed for ensuring the high design requirements imposed on the quality of dam construction.
