Parameters of canals constructed by the crater blasting method
Conclusions Field investigations of canals created by blasting in soils with various physical and mechanical properties established that in cohesive soils a minimum flow velocity occurs as a consequence of the formation of a large mass of coarse aggregates in the zone of back-fallen soil (with a high roughness coefficient). In this case, owing to disturbance of cohesion between individual aggregates, the soils are eroded at a comparatively low flow velocity in the canal.In the subsequent period of canal operation the flow velocity in cohesive soils increases considerably as a result of intensification of the silting effect on the underlying layers, and the rate of erosion decreases noticeably.
