Illusory regional income differentials
Abstract This paper is divided into two main sections: the first deals with the theoretical and practical interpretation of statistical data concerning a given region of a larger economy. We argue that much of the raw data are inherently faulty without more sophisticated statistical manipulation. Policy recommendations based upon such data can be no better than the data. The second section is devoted to illustration of the problems faced in using regional statistics. These illustrations are drawn primarily from the Canadian economy.
