Usage of geological maps for civil engineering purposes in quaternary and holocene areas
Summary The present geological mapping of the Geological Survey of The Netherlands is highly intended to serve for engineering technical purposes such as civil engineering technics, hydrology, agricultural engineering technics and environmental planning in general. This means in the first place a legend which permits to include relevant technical information in the map without disturbing the imagination of the geological genesis of the area. Besides the legendary problems a relevant choice of the additional single value maps may enlarge the applicability of the geological map. Finally, the three-dimensional information is accomplished by numerous profiles from which technical information can be derived. However, the user of the maps has to realize that some efforts have to be made to translate geologically classified units into terms of technical application. Specifications and restrictions in this respect are to be taken from the explanatory book which belongs to the complete set of maps.
