The role of engineering geology in developing Sydney's environment—Past, present and future
Summary Before about 10 years ago in Sydney the effects of geological conditions on the desgin and construction of civil engineering works were given little consideration; the builders used building codes and traditional construction techniques. This attitude seems to be due to the fact that serious geological problems were not encountered. Since this time the construction industry has been increasingly made aware of the geology as a result of foundation problems, landslides, the depletion of natural resources and the public awareness of the environment. The difficulties encountered have underlined the need for a systematic approach to the recording of geological data, research and the use of available resources, as well as the need to revise building codes and construction techniques. This article gives some examples of typical problems with their solution.
