Studies of the deformation processes in east-maritsa open-pit mines, people’s republic of Bulgaria

Summary The present work is an attempt to compare the character and velocity of deformations on the basis of the data obtained by long-term laboratory studies and regular geodetic surveys. A preliminary assumption concerning the nature of the deformation was the existence of a quasi-undisturbed, structurally weakened massif, with two sliding surfaces in the clays of the overlying complex. A good agreement between the results has been established. Nature and velocity of creeping, as well as the critical values and time of landslide initiation have been determined. Through an appropriate technology it is possible to obtain creep velocities less than the critical ones and to control the process of deformations, which will increase the economics of exploitation of open-pit mines.
