Regional engineering geological mapping from aerial photographs
Summary The interpretation of aerial photographs can be very usefully applied in engineering geological mapping during the project planning and reconnaissance phases of civil engineering projects. This paper gives a review of the methodology as developed, used and taught at the ITC for the optimum use of photo-interpretation in regional engineering geological mapping. Photo-interpretation, according to this procedure, provides a subdivision of an area in homogeneous zones of rock and soil. Additionally it enables the engineering geologist the proper planning of the fieldwork and the selection of locations for field sampling, necessary for the classification and description of the mapping units in engineering geological terms. The procedure results in a considerable reduction of time needed for fieldwork. Some results of the application of these procedures in an area in the South-Central Pyrenees in Spain are shown.
