Abstract Excavation and maintenance of tunnels in rocks containing anhydrite and gypsum is one of the most difficult problems in tunnelling practice. Considerable information on the causes of the phenomen, particularly of the swelling behaviour, has been obtained in recent years. A complete logical explanation of the causes is, however, not yet available. Despite the lack of complete knowledge it can be said that the phenomena—(the swelling behaviour and its effects on tunnelling)— depend upon the following factors:Primary stress stateNature and quantity of incoming waterTime-dependent running of the swelling processPercentage of anhydrite and swelling clay minerals in rockNature of anhydrite distribution in rockLevel of gypsum- and anhydrite frontForm and method of excavation The influence of these factors on tunnel construction is discussed and a material law for macroscopic description of the swelling process is stated.
