Some general technical problems of karst investigation for hydrotechnical construction

Summary This paper deals with some practical problems of karst investigation in connection with hydroengineering construction: 1) the role of a large-scale engineering and geological mapping for locating and describing karst; 2) the role of geological historical-genetic analysis in establishing the rules for the formation and distribution of karst; 3) evaluation of karsting with regard to structures and engineering-geological confirmation of design decisions; 4) planning the optimum amount and type of investigation for karst. These far from new problems still present certain difficulties in engineering and geological investigations, and they require further development in both methods and organization.
