Summary The paper first emphasizes that in order to provide satisfactory answers to the complex engineering geological problems in karst environments, the basic geology of large areas must be studied on a regional scale. Then the different types of karstic regions in Turkey are presented: Taurus region, South East Anatolia, Central Anatolia or Konya basin, Northwest Anatolia and Thrace. The regional geological structures reflect on the karst systems. When the detailed data concerning the different regions will be compiled in the near future, engineering geological properties of the carbonate rocks of the different karsts will be better understood. In addition, investigations of parameters which affect the development of karst systems will supply more economical and more confident solutions to the engineering geological problems of construction on soluble rocks.
