Long-term geophysical observations on the inguri dam rock foundation

Summary It has been found that during construction of the dam, prior to the filling of the reservoir, compaction and loading of the rocks under the weight of the structure took place. As this happened, the sizes of the actively deforming zone were found to be 60–80 m (normal to canyon slope). From the inception of reservoir filling the character of the deformation changed. In the process of wateringress into the rock mass decompaction developed in the foundation resulting from the back pressure of fissure water. The size of the active zone, where decompaction is observed at the site of the arch dam, reaches 200–250 m and it is 500 m in the head of the reservoir.
