Slurry seal texture as affected by aggregate gradation
Abstract Although slurry seal has been used since the 1950s, consistently successful application has been difficult in achieving both durable and skid-resistant slurry seal. This paper presents the results of a study dealing with the effects of aggregate gradation on the surface texture which directly affects the skid-resistance of a slurry seal. Studies of surface texture characteristics conducted on three series of 47 slurry seal mixes showed that there is a critical asphalt content corresponding to 5.5 to 6.5 μm film thickness and that the macrotexture is strongly affected by the difference between the maximum aggregate size and the slurry thickness.
