Buried river valleys and buried alluvia and their engineering geological significance
Abstract The problem of the difference between the following terms: buried river valley and buried alluvium is discussed. The buried river valley ought to be understood only as a considerable long segment of a former river valley with its preserved constant or very little changed shape, covered with younger deposits. The requirement of the interpretation possibility of the hydrological function of the buried river valley during the period prior to its burial must be met. When it cannot be met the preserved sediments of the former river ought to be called buried alluvia: they were usually translocated from their former, primary position. The significance of the discrimination of buried river valleys and buried alluvia for engineering-geological purposes is discussed.
