Deformation Pattern of Sand Subject to Static Penetration
Results are presented for experimental–theoretical investigations of the deformation pattern of sand when penetrated by a prototype probe. The deformation was measured by the contact-free method based on digital-imaging techniques. Numerical modeling was performed by "PLAXIS" software. Clearly expressed localization of shear deformations is established between bounds of a family of strips in the mass of sand around the prototype probe.
