Study into the behaviour of mechanically built-up timber girders for bridge construction
Abstract In many developing countries, bridge construction is a very expensive business and a severe drain on the foreign exchange resources of the countries since the materials and construction technology are often imported. Many of these countries however abound in timber which could be utilised for bridge construction. This study identifies an appropriate mechanically built-up timber girder which could be used for bridge construction in these countries. The study seeks to improve upon an existing theory related to the structural behaviour of the girder. Specifically, it seeks to define the effective moment of inertia and the effective area of shear of its cross-section.
